Stepout

Learning to make a difference

The Stepout is a ‘rite of passage’ adventure that is a highlight of our students’ senior school experience. It takes place in Grade 10 and promotes active learning with direct personal experiences while hiking, cycling, and canoeing in the beautiful Overberg region.

If we want children to flourish, to become truly empowered, then let us allow them to love the earth before we ask them to save it. Perhaps this is what Thoreau had in mind when he said, “the more slowly trees grow at first, the sounder they are at the core, and I think the same is true of human beings.

The Herschel Stepout is a chance to learn in new and exciting ways. It is intended to challenge the participants to extend their boundaries and to build their strength and resourcefulness. It provides them with opportunities to discover more about themselves, to test themselves in a variety of situations, to learn new skills and to develop as individuals.

Through the variety of experiences, all on the Herschel Stepout are able to contribute, to learn and to teach. Emotional, organisational, and practical intelligence are as important as physical prowess or intellectual ability. Plus, teamwork is a key factor: relationships will be tested, and new ones formed.

This unique experience is challenging, enjoyable and memorable in ways which, though hard to predict, will be unmistakable and lasting.
