Learning to make a difference

Drama

Weekly drama classes offer plenty of opportunity for the girls to express themselves through movement, improvisation and vocal techniques. The Pre-Preparatory and Preparatory School stage large productions in the Theatre, so preparation for these events is an exciting part of the curriculum.

Clubs

Herschel believes that the importance of Art lies in the fact that the students learn to see more, sense more, perceive more, recall more, and become more aware of their expanding and changing environments. Pupils are given individual creative stimulation and encouraged to develop the exciting unpredictability of their designs. Key to this are our several thriving clubs or interest groups, such as the Eco Kids and the General Knowledge and LitQuiz teams. Here the imagination and inventiveness of our students truly know no bounds!

Music

Herschel Preparatory has a thriving and dynamic Music Department that focuses on cultivating a passion for music. Music appreciation and movement are introduced during class music lessons across all grades. Music is an integral part of Herschel and no assembly, formal event or service is without singing or music.

Ensembles

Choral

Our Junior Choir (Grade 2-3) and Senior Choir (Grade 4-7) rehearse once a week and perform at all our services and various concerts throughout the year. A highlight is when the choirs lead the congregational singing at our wonderful Carol Services at the end of the year.

Instrumental

We have a thriving instrumental ensemble programme in the Prep. In the Foundation Phase, the girls are prepared for ensemble playing through programmes such as Vibey Violins and Recorder Robins. The Junior Orchestra (Grade 4-5) and Senior Orchestra (Grade 6-7) rehearse once a week and play a wide range of music from contemporary pop music, to classical favourites, to accompanying hymns at various services. Other ensembles offered are Marimba Bands, Guitar Ensembles and Percussion Ensembles.

Individual Tuition and Music Theory

Individual instrumental tuition in a wide range of instruments is offered from Grade 1-7 and group theory classes are held daily after school. We have a large and dynamic part-time staff who teach at Herschel and are also actively involved in music performance and education in and around Cape Town and South Africa.
