Herschel 1st team hockey ranked number 2 in SA

Herschel is so proud of our Hockey 1st Team and their coach Miss Cindy Brown! This past weekend they participated in the toughest school tournament in the country, held at Oranje Meisiesskool in Bloemfontein. The FNB Super 12 Tournament is widely acknowledged as the premier hockey tournament in the country as it consists of the top 12 school hockey teams vying to be crowned as the number 1 hockey school in the country.

Whilst one could argue that the ranking system is not 100% accurate, it is pretty close! To qualify, a school must occupy a top 12 spot on the SA Schools Sports ranking list. These rankings are determined once schools have submitted their results as they complete games during the season. Just prior to the tournament, Herschel were in 8th spot and have now moved to number 2 in the rankings, ranked behind Oranje only, whom Herschel beat in a pulsating match during the round robin stage of this tournament.

This is the highest ranking Herschel has achieved and this meteoric rise has in no small part been made possible due to the outstanding coaching ability of Miss Cindy Brown.

At the closing ceremony, Herschel received their silver medals, being runner up to Oranje Meisiesskool, who were their opponents for a second time in the Final. Oranje were deserved winners and although Herschel were unable to match their superior speed and fitness on the day, our girls will always savor their victory over them in the pool stages, which was Oranje’s first loss in 4 years!

We are also very proud of Kayla de Waal (Grade 11) who was announced as the joint Player of the Tournament, and Angie Welham (Grade 11) who was awarded Herschel’s Most Valuable Player of the Tournament!
